The Angel of Grief was erected in 1901, a monument to Jane Stanford’s brother, Henry Lathrop. It was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, and a replacement was carved in 1908.

Unfortunately, it has suffered from the elements over the years, including accumulations of dirt, carbon, and biological growth.
